Screenplay Practice

Character In class we were looking at Character development and we did our own writing describing a character we chose. This is my writing; INT. BEDROOM, NIGHT His name was Shiro, everyone called him the money man. Loved his daughter Kayla as much as he loved his girlfriend.

What am I going to make?

Screenplay or short film? I think I will be making a screenplay because when I made a screenplay as a task I really enjoyed writing it and coming up with ideas. I think when you're making a screenplay you have unlimited choices that you can make as it's really writing down your own story. Also, the film idea I am thinking of involves collecting specific actors so, this will be hard for me if I made a short film.

Narrative structures

Narrative Structures 3 Act structure The 3 act structure is a model used in narrative fiction that divides a story/film in three parts; Setup, confrontation, resolution. Propp's Character Theory Vladimir Propp analysed Russian fairy tales and came up with a theory that most stories/films have different types of characters in them; The villain, Hero, Princess, Mentor, False Hero and etc. Todorov's narrative theory Todorov's narrative theory is quite similar to the 3 act structure but with more steps. He suggests that all narratives follow this structure; 1. Equilibrium (everything is as it should be) 2. Disruption (by an event) 3. Recognition of disruption 4. Attempt to repair disruption 5. Return to equilibrium Strauss' binary opposites Levi-Strauss proposed a theory of 'binary opposites' which suggests that the majority of narratives in media forms such as books and films contain opposing main characters. These binary oppo...

Over

Over Over is a short film directed by J örn Threlfall. It is based on a true story about a man who was hiding in the aircrafts wheel - well, and fell out when the landing gear was lowered. The film takes on a structure which makes the time go back and I think it is perfectly planned because, the one part that creates tension is where we see the man fall and that is like a one or two seconds so if that was at the start of the film then, the rest of the film would've been pointless so, by putting this scene at the end, the director slowly creates tension from the start by using long shots and going back in time raising questions from the audiences mind as what is happening? As much as I really like this film, the only part I can look at is the structure however, I will not be using this structure in my film.

Arrival

Arrival Arrival is short movie based on a pregnant young girl trying to decide if she should keep her baby or not. She is waiting for the babies partner and will tell him her decision. Overall, I really didn't like this short film because I don't find the story interesting. Also, the train scene I understood what it conveyed (the arrival of a train just like the arrival of a baby) however, I felt like it came at the wrong moment and it confused me at first too. So, I don't think I will take anything from the movie onto my screenplay.

Operator

Operator Operator is a short, Drama based film. Its directed by Caroline Bartleet and It shows a women named Laura who works as an operator taking emergency calls for fire services. The caller is a young mother named Grace and in a panicking tone keeps telling Laura that there is fire in the house and her son is trapped in the bedroom. Throughout the short film Laura needs to keep calm her self and to advise and give directions to keep Grace safe however, Grace is panicking too much so Laura tries to help her as much as she can until the fire services arrive. At the end fire services arrive and Grace and her son is safe so as well as Laura, the audience is relieved too. This film in my opinion is the best film out of all the films that we've watched because of the way suspense is created in a very simple way. Sound is used very well to create suspense because sometimes we cant hear the voice of Grace in the phone and also sometimes we can hear stuff breaking and Grace s...
